Yudi Bennett to Receive Frank Capra Achievement Award

Yudi Bennett will be the recipient of the Directors Guild of America Frank Capra Achievement Award, DGA President Martha Coolidge and Awards Committee Chairperson Howard Storm announced today. The Capra Award, given to an Assistant Director or Unit Production Manager in recognition of career achievement in the Industry and service to the Guild, will be presented to Bennett at the DGA Awards on March 1, 2003.

Bennett, who began working as a Second Assistant Director following her training under the DGA Trainee Program, became a First Assistant Director on Alan Alda's 1981 feature film, The Four Seasons. Her long list of credits can be found on feature films, made for television movies and television series, including Watching Ellie, Pleasantville, The Game, Star Trek: Generations and The Client. She was part of the directing team on Kramer vs. Kramer (2nd AD) and The Beach Boys: An American Family (1st AD), both of which won the DGA's Outstanding Directorial Achievement Award, as well as Annie (1st AD) and Broadcast News (1st AD), which were nominated for the DGA's Outstanding Directorial Achievement Award.

She has been a member of the National Board of Directors since 1995 and is serving her third term as 1st Vice-Chair of the West Coast AD/UPM/TC Council of which she has been a member since 1989. Bennett, who has served on numerous Guild Committees, is currently serving on the Guild's Administrative Committee, Orientation Committee and (Chair) Safety Committee. She became a Trustee of the DGA Pension and Health Plans in 2000 and has been a Trustee of the DGA Foundation for 10 years.

The Frank Capra Achievement Award was established in 1980 to recognize an Assistant Director's or Unit Production Manager's career achievement in the Industry and service to the Guild. Frank Capra served as DGA President from 1939-1941 and 1960-1961. Past recipients of the Award include Burt Bluestein, Cheryl Downey and Bob Jeffords.
