"In the globalized marketplace of today, DGA members often work for multinational companies that shoot and produce in a myriad of English-speaking countries around the world. Unfortunately, levels of protection for directors when shooting in these countries tend to vary greatly. With this in mind, over the past two years the DGA and six other English speaking countries have formed the International Affiliation of English Speaking Directors Organizations (IAESDO), whose purpose it is to work together in order to achieve, collectively, the equalization of protection for directors around the globe.

At its 2004 meeting in Dublin, Ireland, IAESDO formally presented the Dublin Declaration—a Code of Principles stating IAESDO's international position on the economic and creative rights of directors. Last month the DGA participated in IAESDO's second annual meeting, held in Auckland, New Zealand on November 12 and 13. It was there that IAESDO took the next step by defining its mission and identifying specific actions that the organization could implement during 2005.

The mission of the International Affiliation of English Speaking Directors Organizations is:

    1. To serve as a source of communication and information sharing among the member organizations
    2. To be guided by the principle that "the big shall help the small." In other words, the larger Guilds will work hand in hand with the smaller Guilds to strengthen and guide their organizations so they are better able to advocate for their director members
    3. To focus on targeted campaigns specifically designed with the goal of helping member organizations achieve improved creative and economic rights for directors.
