Meet the Nominees: Documentary

February 7, 2024 76th Annual DGA Awards

On February 7, DGA members were gathered online for the 2024 edition of the Meet the Nominees: Documentary event. Following a welcome from DGA Documentary Committee Co-Chair Marina Zenovich and a screening of clips from the honored films, nominees Moses Bwayo & Christopher Sharp (Bobi Wine: The People’s President), Madeleine Gavin (Beyond Utopia), Davis Guggenheim (Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie) and D. Smith (Kokomo City) engaged in a lively and entertaining conversation about their work moderated by Documentary Award Screening Committee Co-Chairs Patrick Creadon and Yance Ford.

Nominee Mstyslav Chernov (20 Days in Mariupol) was unable to attend.

In addition to Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, Guggenheim’s directorial credits include the documentaries He Named Me MalalaIt Might Get Loud and the Academy Award-winning, An Inconvenient Truth; and episodes of the series The Defenders, Deadwood, 24 and NYPD Blue. He was nominated for the DGA Award for Documentary for his 2011 feature, Waiting for Superman. Guggenheim has been a DGA member since 1994.

Kokomo City is Smith’s feature documentary directorial debut. 
 
Patrick CreadonPatrick Creadon (moderator)
Creadon’s directorial credits include the documentaries The Loyola Project, Ski Bum: The Warren Miller Story, Hesburgh, Square Roots: The Story of SpongeBob SquarePants, All Work All Play, If You Build It, I.O.U.S.A., Wordplay; and episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, 30 for 30 and Independent Lens. He has been a DGA member since 2011 and serves as a co-chair of the DGA Documentary Awards Committee. 
 
Yance FordYance Ford (moderator)
Ford’s directorial credits include the documentaries Power, The Color of Care and Strong Island; and episodes of Work in Progress, The Me You Can’t See, Pride and Trial by Media. He has been a DGA member since 2019 and serves as a co-chair of the DGA Documentary Awards Committee.
