Action with Storytelling: In Conversation with Director Ben Hernandez Bray

April 24, 2024 A DGA Latino Committee Meeting Event

On April 24, the Latino Committee (LC) meeting featured the discussion, Action with Storytelling: In Conversation with Director Ben Hernandez Bray. During the discussion co-moderated by LC Co-Chair, Director Eli Gonda and Alternate Co-Chair, Director Alejandro Brugués, Bray drew on his directorial experience augmented by his background as a Stunt Coordinator and performer to share information about creating and directing action sequences with equal attention to story and character.

Bray revealed how his experiences have shaped his unique vision as a Director and shared his approach to storyboarding, working with actors, and strategies for preparing for different types of action scenes. He further stressed the importance of Directors leaning into the expertise of the stunt coordinators on their sets and having an open dialogue with them to get the support and information that they need.

Bray’s directorial credits include the feature film El Chicano; and episodes of Walker, The Lincoln Lawyer, Cruel Summer, Big Sky, S.W.A.T., 9-1-1: Lone Star, Queen of the South, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, Arrow and Roswell, New Mexico. His stunt coordinator/stunt performer credits include DGA Award-nominated features such as Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born and David O. Russell’s American Hustle; and DGA Award-winning features such as Ben Affleck’s Argo and Joel & Ethan Coen’s No Country for Old Men.  Bray has been a DGA member since 2005.
