Director Zack Snyder discusses Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire

December 17, 2023 A DGA Membership Screening Q&A in Los Angeles

The fate of a galaxy hinges on a battle between a peaceful settlement and a tyrannical ruling force in Director Zack Snyder’s epic space opera, Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire.

Snyder’s film tells the story of a colony on a distant moon that seeks the help of Kora, a mysterious stranger living amongst them, when they are threatened by the armies of a despotic realm.

On December 17, after the DGA membership screening in Los Angeles, Snyder discussed the making of Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire during a Q&A moderated by Director Louis Leterrier (Fast X).

During the conversation, Snyder revealed why he chose to serve as both Director and Cinematographer on the film.

“I was a Director-Cameraman for years in the commercial world. When I went to do Dawn of the Dead, they were like, ‘That’s not really a thing in movies. You can’t do both jobs.’ The truth is after my experience on Justice League, I just felt like I had gotten a little bit distant from the process. When you’re doing a gigantic movie you can find yourself really kind of far away from the actors. When I did Army of the Dead, I was like, ‘I want to shoot it myself,’ because I forgot what the camera looks like or what it feels like. It was really beautiful and I felt incredibly reenergized and reconnected to the process of making a movie. When it came to Rebel Moon, I was like, ‘Okay. This is a super technical job, but I’m down. So, let’s do it.’ It was super rewarding.”

Snyder’s other directorial credits include the feature films Army of the Dead, Zack Snyder's Justice League, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Man of Steel, Sucker Punch, Watchmen, 300 and Dawn of the Dead. He has been a DGA member since 1997.
