Exploring Latinx Indigenous American Roots through Film and Television

February 21, 2023 An Eastern Diversity Steering Committee Discussion

On February 21, the Eastern Diversity Steering Committee (EDSC) meeting featured the online panel discussion, Exploring Latinx Indigenous American Roots through Film and Television. In a conversation moderated by EDSC Co-Chair Canella Williams-Larrabee) and illustrated by clips from their work, Latinx indigenous American Directors Peter Bratt (Soul of a Nation), Chief Damon Corrie (Guama), Ermelinda Cortes (We Are Still Here, the Taino Lives!) and Aurora Guerrero (Mosquita y Mari) discussed own indigenous identities as well as how it informs their projects. The panelists also spoke about Indigenous representation in films overall and how it is important to differentiate their stories from colonized Latinx depictions. Following the moderated portion of the conversation, they took questions from the online audience.
