DGA members seeking ways to better prepare for their next episodic directing assignment received valuable information on January 20 when the DGA Director Development Initiative (DDI) hosted its first interactive lab of 2022, Visual Storytelling: Editing and the Magic that is Post. The online event explored how Directors can shape a story through editing and post-production in a session led by Director Arthur Forney (FBI, Chicago Med).
Following a welcome by DGA Diversity Task Force Co-Chair Michael Goi (Big Sky), Forney discussed how skillful use of post-production is an opportunity for Directors to enhance their storytelling process. Utilizing the old Hollywood aphorism, “There are three movies: the movie you write, the one you shoot and the one you cut,” and spoke about the relationship between the three phases of the filmmaking process.
A 30-year veteran in the industry, Forney began his career in post-production at Warner Bros. before moving to Universal where he served as an editor on the hit CBS series, Magnum, P.I. He joined Wolf Films in 1987 working as an editor then began directing in 1994 with episodes of Profiler and has since directed numerous episodes of New York Undercover, Law & Order, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Law & Order: Criminal Intent. He currently serves as the Executive Producer on Wolf’s series including FBI, Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, Chicago Med and Chicago Justice. He also heads all of Wolf Entertainment’s post-production activiies. Forney joined the DGA in 1992.
