Director Kat Coiro discusses Marry Me

February 12, 2022 A DGA Membership Screening Q&A in New York

Faced with a publicity nightmare, a music superstar impulsively weds a complete stranger in Director Kat Coiro’s romantic comedy, Marry Me.

Coiro’s film sings the story of Kat Valdez (Jennifer Lopez), who is half of a sexy celebrity power couple planning a live wedding during a concert being broadcast to a a global audience of fans. Seconds before their vows, Kat discovers her fiancé Bastian (Maluma) has been unfaithful and in a moment of inspired insanity, she chooses to marry divorced high-school math teacher Charlie Gilbert (Owen Wilson) who has been dragged to the concert by his daughter Lou and his best friend Parker. As the stunt evolves into an unexpected romance, they must face the question if two people from such different worlds can bridge the gulf between them and find happiness.

On February 12, after the DGA membership screening in New York, Coiro discussed the making of Marry Me during a Q&A moderated by Director Gillian Robespierre (Landline).

During the conversation, Coiro spoke about her inspirations for the film.

“I loved just leaning unabashedly into the romcom. We have references to Pretty Woman and Say Anything and Notting Hill shares many similarities. To go back to your first question about the romcom, there's this thinking out there, ‘Well we can't do the same thing, it's a formula. We have to change it.’ I think there's something unsatisfying in that because it is a fun genre. Also, it's about a woman who's an artist finding her voice, it is about the modern relationship to social media, and it's also a concert. One of the things I was really passionate about was not just seeing a snippet of a song but really finding songs that we could weave into the narrative.”

Coiro’s other directorial credits include the feature films And While We Were Here and A Case of You; the movies for television Happy Accident and Daddy Issues; the pilots for the series Girls5eva and Florida Girls; and episodes of the series Dead to Me, Single Parents, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Sideswiped, Alone Together, The Mick; and the upcoming series She-Hulk.

Coiro has been a DGA member since 2014.
