Director Robin Wright discusses Land

February 11, 2021 A DGA Virtual Q&A

A bereaved woman seeks out a new life off the grid in Director Robin Wright’s drama, Land.

Wright also stars in her film as Edee, a woman who finds herself unable to stay connected to the world she once knew after suffering immense personal tragedy and decides to retreat to the magnificent, but unforgiving, wilds of the Rockies and teach herself how to survive.

On February 11, Wright discussed the making of Land in a DGA Virtual Q&A moderated by Director Amy Redford (The Guitar).

Wright spoke about the speed at which the film came together with the backing of her producers and how she hadn’t originally planned to play the lead. “We all saw the same vision for this movie. I’d never had the experience of four weeks of prep. That was like heaven to be able to have discussions about how you want it to look, what you want the tone to be and then at the last minute we didn’t have time to cast the movie because we got financing so quickly after waiting a year. We had maybe two weeks before we had to lock and load and get up to Alberta, Canada. The producers said, ‘We can’t take the risk of not getting this cast in 48 hours, so what do you think about doing it?’ And I was like, ‘I really don’t want to do both! That’s a lot!’ But at the end, I was like, “Well, I’m going to be there anyway... Okay. Let’s go.”

Land is Wright’s feature directorial debut. She has also directed episodes of the series House of Cards.

She has been a DGA member since 2014.
