Director Edgar Wright discusses Last Night in Soho

October 23, 2021 A DGA Membership Screening Q&A in Los Angeles

A woman’s ability to step into the past unveils a dark mystery in Director Edgar Wright’s thriller, Last Night in Soho.

Wright’s film tells the story of Eloise, an aspiring fashion designer, who is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s where she encounters a dazzling wannabe singer, Sandie. But the glamour is not all it appears to be and the dreams of the past start to crack and splinter into something far darker.

On October 23, after the DGA membership screening in Los Angeles, Wright discussed the making of Last Night in Soho during a Q&A moderated by Director Phil Lord (22 Jump Street).

During the conversation, Wright discussed his trepidations over tackling a film decidedly different and darker than any of his previous work and why he took the plunge. “If you're not entering into a project and trying to bite off more than you can chew, that's not a good thing. I think you've always gotta’ sort of try to stretch yourself or do something that scares you. There's a number of things in this I've never done before, so I think entering into this — and maybe why it's been percolating for a long time because I really wanted to do it —  I was slightly scared of it. But the idea of coming to work and doing something that you feel you could do in your sleep is not really a good path.”

In addition to Last Night in Soho, Wright’s directorial credits include the feature films, Baby Driver, The World's End, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Hot Fuzz and the BAFTA Award-nominated Shaun of the Dead; the feature documentary, The Sparks Brothers; and episodes of the television series, Spaced, Sir Bernard's Stately Homes and Asylum. Wright has been a DGA member since 2008.
