On July 21 ahead of their online meeting, the Women’s Steering Committee (WSC) hosted the discussion, Paperless Sets: Best Practices for Directing Teams.
Following an introduction by WSC Co-Chair Maria Burton, Directors Patricia Cardoso and Valerie Weiss, UPM Courtney Franklin and 1st AD Bellamy Forrest discussed how teams can use digital alternatives to reduce the use of paper documentation on sets.
In a conversation moderated by Directors Shaz Bennett and Rachel Raimist, the panelists covered production apps like Scriptation, Shot Designer and Production Pro can make the production workflow a smoother and greener process by eliminating paper waste.
About the Panelists:
Director Patricia Cardoso
A DGA member since 2001, Cardoso’s directorial credits include the feature films, Real Women Have Curves and El Paseo De Teresa; the movies for television, Lies in Plain Sight and Meddling Mom; and episodes of Party of Five, All Rise, Queen Sugar and In the Dark. Cardoso won a DGA Student Film Award for her 1994 short, The Water Carrier of Cucunuba. She is also a member of the DGA Independent Directors Committee.

Director Valerie Weiss
Weiss’s directorial credits include the feature films, The Archer, A Light Beneath Their Feet and Losing Control; the movie for television, An American Girl Story: Maryellen 1955 – Extraordinary Christmas; and episodes of, Outer Banks, Why Women Kill, Suits and Impulse. She has been a DGA member since 2016.

Bennett’s directorial credits include feature film, Alaska is a Drag, based on her short of the same name; as well as episodes of the series Billions, Queen Sugar, Animal Kingdom and Bosch; and the short films Desert Rats, Top of the Circle and Tunnels. Bennett joined the Guild in 2019.

UPM Courtney M. Franklin
Franklin has worked on several seasons of Insecure, How to Get Away with Murder and Major Crimes, the pilots of For the People, Shark and Ugly Betty; and the feature films Barbershop and Bringing Down the House. She joined the Guild in 2002 and currently serves as an Associate member of the DGA National Board and as the Second Vice Chair Western AD/UPM Council. She also served two terms as a co-chair of the DGA African American Steering Committee.

1st AD Bellamy Forrest
Forrest’s Assistant Director credits include Michael McCullers' feature Baby Mama; the pilots for the series Great News and Kidnapped; and episodes of the series The Deuce, Billions, Sweetbitter, Divorce, Power, Jessica Jones, Hostages and Big Lake; and several DGA Award-nominated episodes of 30 Rock. She has been a DGA member since 2005.
