On May 15, the African American Steering Committee (AASC) hosted their first online meeting. In addition to Committee business, the meeting featured a conversation with Sony Pictures Television Entertainment’s Vice President, Creative Programming, Diversity & Inclusion, Brett King.
A television veteran, King has been a senior level executive at BET, The WB, Paramount Television Studios and 20th Century Fox Television prior to his current post at Sony. His executive career followed his work in New York, where he was a staff producer of the commercial parodies at Saturday Night Live as well as a producer of innumerable music videos, commercials and promos.
In a conversation moderated by AASC Co-Chair Jeff Byrd, King discussed topics including his career and experiences serving as an executive at Sony Pictures Television, his advice on how to navigate a career as a director in episodic television, and specific insights into Sony’s Diverse Directors Program. Following the moderated portion of the event, King took questions from the online audience.
ABOUT THE COMMITTEE:
The African American Steering Committee (AASC) was born of a desire to address the specific needs of the African-American members of the Directors Guild. One of the primary goals of the Committee is to establish a productive line of communication between African-American members and the creative community. The Committee meets monthly to plan events throughout the year celebrating the achievements of African-Americans, as well as forums with industry executives to proactively address what can be done to hire more African-Americans.
