The Promise

Terry George discusses The Promise

April 26, 2017 A DGA Q&A in New York

A love triangle develops during the last days of the Ottoman Empire in Director Terry George’s new historical drama, The Promise.

George’s film tells the story of the romance that develops between brilliant medical student Michael (Oscar Isaac) and beautiful dance instructor Ana (Charlotte Le Bon) who are drawn together by their shared Armenian heritage. Complicating matters is Ana’s boyfriend Chris (Christian Bale), an American photojournalist dedicated to exposing political truth. The romantic rivalry must take a back seat to matters of survival as the Ottoman Empire crumbles into war-torn chaos and they must join forces to get their people to safety during the Armenian genocide.

Following the DGA membership screening in New York on April 26, George sat down with Director Tony Gilroy (The Bourne Legacy) to discuss the making of The Promise.

In addition to The Promise, George’s credits include the feature films Some Mother's Son, Reservation Road and Hotel Rwanda; the movie for television A Bright Shining Lie; the pilots for the series Outlaw and The District; and episodes of the series In Treatment. In 1992, George won the Academy Award for “Best Short Film, Live Action” for The Shore (shared with Oorlagh George). He has been a DGA member since 1997.
