Jeff Nichols on Loving NY

Director Jeff Nichols discusses Loving

November 4, 2016 DGA Q&As in Los Angeles and New York

An interracial couple fights to remain legally married in Director Jeff Nichols’ new biographical drama, Loving.

Nichols’ film recounts the true story of Richard Loving (Joel Edgerton), a white man who weds his black girlfriend, Mildred (Ruth Negga), in Washington, DC during the late-1950s. After returning to their home in Virginia where interracial marriage is illegal, they are arrested and imprisoned. Determined to legalize their right to remain a family, their civil rights case, Loving v. Virginia, winds its way through the justice system for nearly a decade until it is finally resolved by the Supreme Court.

Following the November 4 DGA membership screening in Los Angeles, Nichols sat down with Director James Gray (The Lost City of Z) to discuss the making of Loving, which was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. Nichols also spoke about the film in a conversation with Director Dan Algrant (Greetings from Tim Buckley) following the DGA membership screening in New York on November 18.

In addition to Loving, Nichols’ credits include the feature films Midnight Special, Mud, Take Shelter, and Shotgun Stories. Nichols has been a DGA member since 2011.
