On June 20th, 134 golfers and 44 tennis players took part in the 20th Annual DGA Foundation Golf Tournament and the 13th Annual DGA Foundation Tennis Tournament. Both events were fundraisers created to benefit the Directors Guild Foundation (DGF), which is dedicated to assisting DGA members facing financial hardship.
The golf tournament and the awards reception were held at the Wilshire Country Club, which was founded in 1919 and has hosted many great tournaments and groups such as the LA Open, the Senior PGA and the LPGA. The tennis tournament took place right around the corner at the Los Angeles Tennis Club, home of champions since 1921.
In his welcome during the award ceremony and dinner in the Wilshire Country Club banquet hall, DGA Foundation Chair Donald Petrie thanked all the players and called out the tournaments’ co-chairs for special praise. “This event could not have happened without the fine work of four good-guys,” said Petrie. “Please join me in thanking our Golf Co-Chairs Mel Damski and Michael Zinberg, and the tennis Co-Chairs Gil Cates, Jr. and Howard Storm for their hard work and service.” Petrie also called attention to the contributions of DGA National Executive Director Jay D. Roth. “Jay is the founding father of this Tournament. Wilshire Country Club is his club and he makes us being here possible.”
After speaking about the work of the DGF, that beyond assisting members in need also supports such good works as the Motion Picture Television Fund and recently made a ten year commitment to their Cognitive Wellness Program in its goal to battle the onset of Alzheimer’s dementia, Petrie announced that due to the generosity of all involved in the tournaments $50,000 had been raised to benefit the Foundation. He also thanked the tournaments’ gold, silver and bronze sponsors, before turning the proceedings over to Golf Tournament Co-Chair Mel Damski.
Damski began the awards ceremony by announcing the raffle prize winners and the winners of the DGA Championship “Own Ball Flight” golf tournament. Tennis Tournament Co-Chair Gil Cates, Jr. spoke on behalf of himself and Co-Chair Howard Storm and announced the winners of all three flights of the tennis tournament. Then Damski returned to announce the winners of the Scramble golf tournament and invite all the players to return next year for the 2017 DGA Foundation Golf and Tennis tournaments scheduled for Monday, June 19th.
