Director Bennett Miller explores a tragic collision between eccentric old money and the competitive world of Olympic sports in his new drama Foxcatcher.
Based on true events, Miller’s film reveals the story of what happened when Olympic Gold Medal-winning wrestler Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) was invited by wealthy heir John du Pont (Steve Carell) to help form a team to train for the 1988 Seoul Olympics. But their complicated relationship with Schultz’s revered brother Dave (Mark Ruffalo) mixed with du Pont’s own family drama, leads to tragic events.
Following the DGA membership screening in New York on November 12, Miller spoke about the making of the film in a conversation with Director Spike Jonze (Her). On November 21, he also participated in a Q&A in Los Angeles moderated by Director Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty).
In addition to Foxcatcher, Miller’s filmography includes the feature film Moneyball, the documentary The Cruise and the documentary short The Question, Miller was also nominated for an Academy Award and the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Motion Pictures in 2005 for his feature Capote.
Miller has been a DGA member since 1999.
