Paul Greengrass: Captain Phillips

October 6, 2013 A Director Q&A in Los Angeles

The true story of the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years is the setting of Director Paul Greengrass’s thrilling drama Captain Phillips.

Based upon Richard Phillips’ book, A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALS, and Dangerous Days at Sea, two-time Academy Award®-winner Tom Hanks plays the titular character, whose unarmed container ship – the Maersk Alabama – was commandeered by a small group of Somali pirates in 2009, setting off a dangerous stand-off with the U.S. Navy.

After the Los Angeles membership screening on October 6, Greengrass sat down with Director Brian Helgeland (42) for a discussion about the making of Captain Phillips.

Greengrass’s other works include the feature films Green Zone, The Bourne Ultimatum, United 93, The Bourne Supremacy and Bloody Sunday; the movies for television The Murder of Stephen Lawrence, The Fix and The Theory of Flight; and episodes of television series such as The Late Show and Crime Story. He has been a DGA member since 2005.
