DGA Statement on the Passing of Jane Schimel

Los Angeles – Directors Guild of America President Taylor Hackford made the following statement upon learning today of the passing of Jane Schimel:

“We are deeply saddened to learn today of the passing of former DGA National Board Vice-President, Jane Schimel.  Jane served at the highest levels of Guild leadership and was the DGA’s first female National Vice-President. Jane was a passionate defender of the rights of Assistant Directors and UPMs and served on the Guild’s Eastern AD/UPM Council for almost 40 years, beginning in 1966, including multiple terms as Chair.  One of the first female AD/UPMs in New York, Jane worked on more than 1,500 commercials throughout her more than 50 year career. Our hearts go out to her husband Art and her family at this difficult time.”

DGA Service and Awards

Jane Schimel joined the DGA in 1964.  She served on the National Board of Directors in multiple leadership positions for over 20 years, including two terms as National Vice President (1993-1997).  She was also active on the Eastern AD/UPM Council for decades, beginning in 1966, including several terms as Council Chair (1977-1981, 1982-1986).  In recognition of her service, she was honored with the DGA’s Frank Capra Achievement Award, which is bestowed upon assistant directors or unit production managers in recognition of career achievement in the industry and service to the Directors Guild of America.
