DGA Announces Winners of 10th Annual East Coast Student Filmmaker Awards

Directors Guild of America National Vice President Ed Sherin today announced the winners of the Tenth Annual DGA East Coast Student Filmmaker Awards.

The prestigious $2500 awards are given to student filmmakers in the following categories: Best African-American Student Filmmaker, Best Asian-American Student Filmmaker, Best Latino Student Filmmaker, and Best Woman Student Filmmaker.

"The DGA East Coast Student Film Awards not only provide the Guild with an opportunity to bring attention to emerging director talent, but they also provide us with a chance to encourage diversity of race, gender and spirit in the filmmaking community," Sherin said in announcing the winners. "These four individuals represent the best in student filmmaking today and we look forward to seeing more of their work in the near future."

The 2004 winners, selected by a panel of 12 distinguished DGA member judges, are:

  • Best African-American Student Filmmaker: Jowan Carbin, Welcome to Life – Columbia University
  • Best Asian-American Student Filmmaker: Alex Woo, Rex Steele: Nazi Smasher – NYU
  • Best Latino Student Filmmaker: Carlos Gutierrez, Sleight of Hand – NYU
  • Best Woman Student Filmmaker: Erla Skuladottir, Savior – NYU

A screening of the award-winning films will take place on Tuesday, September 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the Directors Guild Theater, 110 W. 57th Street, New York, New York, 10019.
