Jeff Nichols on Midnight Special

March 20, 2016 A DGA Q&A in Los Angeles

A father and his young son are forced to go on the run after the world learns that the boy possesses mysterious powers in Director Jeff Nichols’ new sci-fi action film Midnight Special.

Midnight Special stars Michael Shannon as Roy, a father desperate to protect his uniquely gifted, eight-year-old son Alton (Jaeden Lieberher) from both an extreme religious sect and a government task force hunting them down. Committed to helping Alton reach his ultimate purpose, their journey escalates to a nationwide manhunt as disparate forces seek his abilities for their own ends.

Following the DGA screening in Los Angeles on March 20, Nichols spoke about the challenges of bringing this story to the screen in a conversation moderated by Director Jonathan Levine (The Night Before).

In addition to Midnight Special, Nichols’ work includes the feature films Mud, Take Shelter — which also starred Shannon — and Shotgun Stories. He has been a member of the DGA since 2011.
