Rob Marshall: Into the Woods

December 20, 2014 DGA Q&As in Los Angeles and New York

Beloved fairy tales get a modern twist in Rob Marshall’s new musical Into the Woods.

Based on Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award-winning Broadway production, Marshall’s Into the Woods, combines the well-known fairy tales of Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Little Red Riding Hood, with the story of the Baker and his Wife who have been cursed with childlessness by a witch. As they seek to break the spell, important lessons are learned along the way.

Following the DGA membership screening in Los Angeles on December 20, Marshall spoke about the making of the film in a conversation with Director Joss Whedon (The Avengers). Marshall also participated in a Q&A with Director Jonathan Demme (Line of Sight) following the DGA screening in New York on December 4.

In addition to Into the Woods, Marshall’s filmography includes the feature films Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Nine, and Memoirs of a Geisha; and the television special The Kennedy Center Honors: A Celebration of the Performing Arts. He won the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film in 2002 for Chicago and the DGA’s Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Musical Variety Award in 2006 for Tony Bennett: An American Classic. He was also nominated for Guild’s Musical Variety Award in 1999 for Annie.

Marshall has been a member of the DGA since 1999.
