The Interrupters

Documentary Series Screens The Interrupters

October 19, 2011 A Special Projects Committee Event

On October 19, the DGA's Documentary Series hosted a screening of The Interrupters, the new film from DGA Award-winning director Steve James (Hoop Dreams).

The Interrupters follows the lives of three "Violence Interrupters" who try to protect their Chicago communities from the street violence they formerly wreaked as gang members. Shot over the course of a year, James’ film follows them as they perform conflict mediation and literally put themselves in harm’s way to stop the cycle of violence raging around them.

Attendees were welcomed to the screening at the Guild's Los Angeles Theater by Special Projects Committee Member Oz Scott. Afterwards, James sat down with director Lynne Littman to talk about the making of the film. James’ other films include the 2008 DGA Documentary Award-nominated At the Death House Door (co-directed with Peter Gilbert), as well as the documentary Stevie (2002) and the dramatic feature Prefontaine (1997).

James has been a member of the DGA since 1995.
