Director Jason Reitman discusses Tully

April 22, 2018 DGA Q&As in Los Angeles and New York

An overwhelmed mother forms a bond with the young nanny hired to make her world survivable in Director Jason Reitman’s new comedic-drama, Tully.

In Reitman’s third collaboration with screenwriter Diablo Cody (Juno and Young Adult) and second with actor Charlize Theron (Young Adult), Theron plays Marlo, a New York suburban mom with two kids and a newborn whose life is slowly being drained away by the challenges of motherhood. When she is sent help in the form of a gifted but challenging night nanny named Tully (Mackenzie Davis), she is hesitant to accept the assistance but comes to form a unique bond with the thoughtful and surprising young woman.

Following the DGA membership screening in Los Angeles on April 22, Reitman sat down with Director Karyn Kusama (Destroyer) to discuss the making of Tully. Reitman also discussed the film in a conversation with Director Neil Burger (The Upside) following the DGA membership screening in New York on April 19.

In addition to Tully, Reitman’s credits include the feature films Men, Women & Children; Labor Day; Young Adult; and Thank You for Smoking; the pilot for the series Casual; and episodes of the series The Office. Reitman was nominated for the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Motion Pictures and the Academy Award for Best Achievement in Directing for his 2009 feature Up in the Air. He also garnered an Oscar nomination for his directing on his 2007 feature Juno. A DGA member since 2000, Reitman also serves on the Western Directors Council and the Independent Directors Committee.
