Director George Tillman Jr. discusses The Hate U Give

October 14, 2018 A DGA Q&A in Los Angeles

A young girl must find the courage to stand up for what’s right in Director George Tillman Jr.’s new drama, The Hate U Give.

Based on the best-selling young adult novel by Angie Thomas, Tillman’s film tells the story of Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg), a dazzling sixteen-year-old African-American girl who is torn between two worlds: the elite, predominantly white prep school she attends; and the poor, predominantly black neighborhood where she lives. Her life becomes even more complicated after she witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer and faces pressure from all sides.

Following the DGA membership screening in Los Angeles on October 14, Tillman sat down with Director Greg Berlanti (Love, Simon) to discuss the making of The Hate U Give.

In addition to The Hate U Give, Tillman’s credits include the feature films Soul Food, Men of Honor, Faster and The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete; the movie for television Love Is a Four-Letter Word; and episodes of the series Power, Luke Cage and This Is Us. Tillman has been a DGA member since 1996.
