2018 Golf and Tennis Tournaments

June 18, 2018 A Directors Guild Foundation Event

On Monday, June 18th, 120 golfers and 62 tennis players took part in the 22nd Annual Directors Guild Foundation (DGF) Golf Tournament and the 15th Annual DGF Tennis Tournament. Both events were fundraisers created to benefit the DGF, a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting DGA members facing difficult times.

The golf tournament and the awards reception were held at the Wilshire Country Club, which was founded in 1919 and has hosted many great tournaments and groups such as the LA Open, the Senior PGA and the LPGA. The tennis tournament took place right around the corner at the Los Angeles Tennis Club, home of champions since 1921.

In his welcome during the award ceremony and dinner in the Wilshire Country Club banquet hall, DGF Chair Donald Petrie thanked all the players on behalf of himself, Golf Co-Chairs Michael Zinberg and Mel Damski, Tennis Co-Chairs Howard Storm and Gil Cates, Jr., and the Tournaments founding Godfather, former DGA National Executive Director and current Senior Advisor, Jay Roth.

Petrie then took the opportunity to speaking about the work of the DGF.

“As Chairman of the Foundation, I am privileged to see the direct impact of our work to help fellow members in crisis” said Petrie. “The DGA Foundation has been around for 73 years, established by a group of Directors who wanted to help their fellow members when tough times hit. This tradition of generosity has made a tangible difference in the lives of hundreds of DGA members.  In addition to the emergency loan program, the DGA Foundation also supports the entertainment community by supporting the Los Angeles and New York Health Fairs hosted by the DGA and the DGA-Producer Pension and Health Plans and through contributions to the Motion Picture and Television Fund and the Actors Fund. This important work by the Foundation could not continue without your support today. On behalf of the Foundation Board and the many members the Foundation has assisted over the years… we thank you.”

To the applause of the assembled, Petrie announced that due to their generosity and support of the day’s tournaments, more than $50,000 has been raised today to benefit the Foundation.

He then thanked the tournaments’ gold, silver and bronze sponsors and announced the raffle prize winners, before turning the proceedings over to Tennis Tournament Co-Chair and DGF Trustee Gil Cates, Jr. spoke on behalf of himself and Tennis Tournament Co-Chair Howard Storm in announcing the winners of all three flights of the tennis tournament. Then Golf Tournament Co-Chair and DGF Assistant Secretary Michael Zinberg spoke on behalf of himself and Golf Tournament Co-Chair Mel Damski in announcing the winners of the separate components of the Golf Tournament that included the traditional “Closest to the Pin” and “Longest Drive” contests and saw the introduction of a “Putting Contest” where the participants had a chance to show off their short game skills. He concluded with the announcement of the winners of the Scramble golf tournament and invite all the players to return next year for 2019 DGA Foundation Golf and Tennis tournaments.
