Bette Gordon on The Drowning

Bette Gordon discusses The Drowning

May 20, 2017 A DGA Q&A in New York

A man’s past actions come back to endanger his present in Director Bette Gordon’s dramatic thriller, The Drowning.

Gordon’s cat-and-mouse tale begins when child psychologist Tom Seymour and his artist wife Lauren are on a walk and spot a young man trying to commit suicide by jumping off a pier. After Tom jumps in and saves him, he later realizes the man is Danny Miller, who was accused of the murder of an old woman many years ago when he was just a boy and convicted largely due to Tom’s psychological testimony at the trial. When Danny starts showing up on Tom’s doorstep and befriending the oblivious Lauren, Tom has to revisit the 12-year-old case and realizes that their present situation was no mere coincidence.

Following the DGA membership screening in New York on May 20, Gordon sat down with Director Maggie Greenwald (Sophie and the Rising Sun) to discuss the making of The Drowning.

In addition to The Drowning, Gordon’s credits include the feature films Handsome Harry, Luminous Motion, Variety, and Empty Suitcases; the segment “Greed - Pay to Play” from the anthology feature Seven Women, Seven Sins; the movie for television Life on the Line; and episodes of the series Love Street and Monsters. Gordon has been a DGA member since 2015.
