20th Century Women

Mike Mills discusses 20th Century Women

December 27, 2016 A DGA Q&A in Los Angeles

A woman enlists the help of others to guide her son into manhood in Director Mike Mills’ new comedic-drama, 20th Century Women.

Loosely based on his own childhood, Mills’ film tells the story of Dorothea (Annette Bening), a single mother raising her adolescent son, Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann), during the height of the cultural revolution taking place in 1979 Santa Barbara, CA. To help steer him through the chaos, Dorothea calls on the help of a quirky punk photographer (Greta Gerwig), a mellow handyman (Billy Crudup) and Jamie’s best friend (Elle Fanning) to serve as role models.

Following the DGA membership screening in Los Angeles on December 27, Mills sat down with Director Marc Webb (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), to discuss the making of 20th Century Women.

In addition to 20th Century Women, Mills’ credits include the feature films Beginners and Thumbsucker; the documentary Does Your Soul Have a Cold?; and the short films Paperboys, Architecture of Reassurance and Deformer. Mills has been a DGA member since 1999.
