An Evening with Director Rodrigo Garcia

May 4, 2010 A Latino Committee Event

On May 4, the Latino Committee welcomed members to the Guild's Los Angeles Theater for a screening of Director Rodrigo García's new feature, Mother and Child.

García's drama tells the story of three women whose lives intersect and are profoundly affected by adoption. Karen (Annette Bening) had a baby at 14, gave her up at birth and has been haunted ever since. Elizabeth (Naomi Watts) grew up as an adopted child; she's a bright, ambitious lawyer, bold and malicious. Lucy (Kerry Washington) is embarking with her husband on the adoption odyssey. Their separate stories become intertwined destines as they voyage through pain and mistakes to find hope and new family connections.

After the screening and an introduction by Latino Committee Co-Chair Director A.P. Gonzalez (Hurricane Party), García was joined onstage by Peabody Award-winning Director Betty Kaplan (Of Love & Shadows, Dona Barbara, Almost a Woman) who served as moderator of a Q&A about his work and the making of the film. García previously directed the films Ten Tiny Love Stories, Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her, Nine Lives and episodes of In Treatment. He has been a member of the DGA since 2000.
