35MM VERSUS HDCAM-24P COMPARATIVE COSTS
Presented By DGA New Technology Committee Randy Turrow, UPM
The comparisons in the Film versus HD BTL budget represent those production items that differ dramatically and therefore does not include all budgetary considerations. This budget is based on a 10 week shoot, with 5,000 feet shot per day.
The following assumptions are not included in the attached $10,000,000 budget.
- Differences in the crew staffing are not stated, but could save in catering, craft service, parking etc.
- Higher shooting ratios in digital allow for more coverage, and less costs
- Some Sony DV tapes have built in memory chips allowing for faster retrieval during editing process saving on post time and money.
- A digital-centric post process is easier to track, more efficient overall with less fall out, thus costs are reduced.
- Digital negative requires less storage requirements, therefore the cost for hard drive rentals are less.
- Less down time on the set with digital camera reload of tape changes than film reloads
- Cost savings in visual effects by working in the digital realm and transferring back to film, instead of scanning film, work in the digital realm, then transferring back to film.
- Instant dailies on set, not having to hold sets for negative report
- Reduced costs in insurance, bond financing, fringes and executive fees on savings
