How to Join

The DGA represents Film and Television Directors, Unit Production Managers, First Assistant Directors, Second Assistant Directors, Technical Coordinators and Tape Associate Directors, Stage Managers and Production Associates.

To join in any Guild category, you must obtain employment with a company that has signed a collective bargaining agreement with us. While the DGA's Director, Technical Coordinator and Production Assistant categories don't require members to meet specific criteria before accepting employment, the following categories do:

In Film:

  • Unit Production Manager
  • First Assistant Director
  • Second Assistant Director

To meet the employment criteria for film requires placement on the appropriate Qualification List. Qualification lists are administered by organizations separate from the Director's Guild of America.

DGA HONORABLE WITHDRAWAL STATUS CONDITIONS

DGA honorable withdrawal status is available to anyone who has been a member in good standing of the Directors Guild of America for five (5) consecutive years and who is not in arrears in the payment of dues or assessments nor otherwise indebted to the Guild.  Eligible members are required to send a written request for honorable withdrawal status to the DGA National offices’ Membership Department, outlining the reasons and probable period for which he or she desires inactive status.  Honorable Withdrawal status is intended as an inactive status for members who are not employed in a DGA capacity and who do not participate in Guild events.  Honorable Withdrawal status allows inactive members to re-activate with a bone fide Guild job, by paying the appropriate dues as outlined below, without re-applying or again paying the applicable initiation fee.

The following conditions apply to Honorable Withdrawal:

  • A member on Honorable Withdrawal status may not participate as a member in Guild screenings, seminars, awards ceremonies and the like, vote in Guild elections or hold Guild office, receive DGA membership cards, receive Guild circulars and publications, be included in the DGA Directory of Members or be included on the list of members in good standing submitted to employers.
  • A member electing Honorable Withdrawal status must pay a $50.00 one-time-only fee.
  • A member on Honorable Withdrawal is subject to percentage dues as required by DGA Constitution & Bylaws Article XI, Section. A., Paragraph 2, currently 1.5 percent of annual residual payments exceeding $10,000, plus an additional 1 percent residuals surcharge.
  • A member on Honorable Withdrawal may reactivate their membership only if they have a bona fide job, which requires active membership in the Guild.  Once returning to Active status in the Guild, a member must remain Active for two (2) consecutive years before again applying for Honorable Withdrawal.
  • A member on Honorable Withdrawal may not commence any assignment until he/she has placed him/herself in an active good standing status with the Guild.  Should a withdrawn member return to Active status within one (1) year from the time he/she was granted withdrawal, he/she shall pay dues for the intervening period, less a credit for the one-time-only fee ($50.00.)  Should a withdrawn member return to Active status in excess of one (1) year from the time he/she was granted withdrawal, he/she shall pay one year's basic dues ($200.00) less a credit for the one-time-only fee ($50.00.)

A member on Honorable Withdrawal is obligated to comply with the By-Laws and Basic Agreements of the Guild and shall keep him/herself informed relative to all changes in By-Laws and Basic Agreements.  Additionally a member on Honorable Withdrawal status shall, at all times, keep the National office of the Guild informed of their address and telephone number.
