PRISONER OF PARADISE
Directed by Malcolm Clarke & Stuart Sender
PRISONER OF PARADISE is the Oscar and DGA Award-nominated documentary about Kurt Gerron, the popular and talented German-Jewish screen actor, cabaret star and director renowned in the 1920s and '30s for his performances in The Blue Angel and Threepenny Opera who was convinced Hitler and the Nazis were just a passing vogue. Fatefully apolitical, ambitious, and preoccupied with his career, he ignored appeals from friends like Fritz Lang, Joseph Von Sternberg, and Peter Lorre to flee Germany, then found himself forced to write and direct a pro-Nazi propaganda film starring his fellow inmates in the "showcase" concentration camp of Theresienstadt.
