At Clover Field in Santa Monica, California, for the filming of The Air Circus, a 1928 Fox silent film that had some sound sequences. The film was co-directed by Howard Hawks and Lewis Seiler. Hawks learned to fly in the U.S. Army Air Service during World War I. His love of aviation is reflected in such films as Ceiling Zero, Air Force and the classics The Dawn Patrol and Only Angels Have Wings. Hawks is quoted as saying, "I'm a storyteller — that's the chief function of a director. And they're moving pictures, let's make 'em move!"
