It was an atmosphere of friendly competition and generous hearts when once again DGA members, corporate sponsors and guests participated in the annual DGA golf tournament. The charity event that benefits the DGA Foundation, enjoyed a repeat performance on the beautiful Wilshire Country Club course, located in the Hancock Park area of Los Angeles.
Although this is actually the sixth time the DGA members and their guests have swung their clubs in the spirit of giving, the golf tournament was renamed the previous year in honor of the late Howard W. Koch, who served as the Chairman of the Directors Guild Foundation for almost 20 years. The Foundation, whose main purpose is to provide no-interest confidential loans to Guild members who are in need of emergency financial assistance, was established in 1945 and is supported by contributions from Guild members. Like the preceding tournaments, this year's event was a success, raising an estimated $40,000 for the Foundation.
Following a perfect morning of camaraderie, birdies and bogeys, the 132 golfers and other guests enjoyed a barbecue buffet luncheon while the scores were tallied. Tournament Chairman Mel Damski and DGA Foundation Chair Delbert Mann thanked the participants and sponsors for this year's tournament's huge success.
This year the main competition was conducted under aggregate team scoring. First place was awarded to the team of Matt Erieg of the DGA Pension & Health Plan with guest Dean Ferris and Pam Di Giovanni and Scott Syring of silver sponsor Delta Dental Plan of California, with an adjusted low score of 53. Second place went to the team of director Bobby Roth, Mack Clapp and Sean O'Neil from gold sponsor The Boston Company Asset Management LLC, and guest Jon Sherin with an adjusted score of 53.70. Third place went to the team of DGA director members David Phinney, Jophery Brown, Joe Stone and Ramy Zada with an adjusted score of 53.75.
The golfers also participated in "Closest to the Pin" and "Longest Drive" contests, which awarded prizes of gift certificates. UPM Ira Shuman scored the closest to the pin on hole no. 4 with a distance of 1'. Director Tim Cronenweth won the closest to the pin on hole no. 7 with a distance of 4'10". Director Jophery Brown won the closest to the pin on hole no. 13 with a distance of 56". Guest Jon Sherin won the longest-drive contest on hole no. 2.
The ceremony also featured the popular annual raffle that offered rounds of golf and golf vacations at prestigious courses in the Southern California area. The Koch family was still well represented as Ruth Koch, widow of Howard W. Koch, was called upon to draw the winning raffle tickets.
Tournament sponsors also included Blue Cross of California; McMorgan & Company; Nigro, Karlin & Segal; Union Bank of California; Miller, Kaplan, Arase & Co., LLP; and Geffner & Bush in the Gold category; and Motion Picture & Television Fund; Alliance Bernstein; Nicholas-Applegate Capital Management; Resch Polster Alpert & Berger LLP; Watson Wyatt Worldwide; and Lynch, Jones & Ryan, in the Silver category.
The Third Annual Howard W. Koch Memorial DGA Golf Tournament will take place on June 16, 2003. Due to its popularity, it was announced that next year's tournament will be returning to the Wilshire Country Club, which was established in 1919, designed by Norman Macbeth and has played host to the L.A. Open, the Senior PGA and LPGA Tournaments.
