DGA Pushing for California Runaway Production Legislation
In addition to its federal legislative efforts, the DGA, along with a coalition of other guilds and unions, has been pushing hard for state legislation. In February, Speaker of the California Assembly Herb Wesson, introduced AB 2747, a wage-based tax credit similar to the federal legislation. AB 2747 quickly passed through three State Assembly Committees with full bipartisan support. On May 29, AB 2747 passed the California Assembly with a bipartisan vote of 75-1. The legislation was scheduled to go before the Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee on June 26, 2002.
In a related development, during the week of June 10, the California Legislature passed a resolution (SJR29) introduced by State Senator Kevin Murray, asking the President and Congress to enact the federal legislation S1278/HR3131, "The United States Independent Film and Television Production Act of 2001."
