Kasi Lemmons, writer and director of Eve's Bayou, the one of the highest grossing indie films of '97, moderated a Q&A for Euzhan Palcy's The Killing Yard which was recently screened by the DGA's Special Projects.

The Killing Yard is based on the true story of the bloody one-day battle at Attica prison, resulting in 39 deaths. With a mere 23 days for physical production and a modest $5.2 million budget, Palcy was working around the clock. A DP herself, Palcy immerses herself in her work.

"When you go to the set you must know what you want because everyone's depending on you as the director," she said.

Palcy enjoys the fact that with television she doesn't need to worry about finding a distributor or getting a film released. "If it weren't for cable many projects, such as The Killing Yard, would most likely never get made, as some material is too small for a feature."

An outspoken woman, Palcy has heeded the advice Bill Mechanic, former Chairman and CEO of Fox films, now an independent producer, once gave her. He urged her to create her own material as the industry has a desire to pigeonhole. With an abundance of well-constructed and important films under her belt, Palcy, who has her own production company, is currently developing romantic and action comedies in addition to a big-budget extravaganza, The Black Spartacus. Much in the vein of Braveheart, the film is about Toussaint L'Ouverture, the man who led the Haitian revolution in 1802.
