On January 22, 2002, DGA First Vice President Martha Coolidge and last year's DGA Award-winning director Ang Lee announced the five nominees for the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for the year 2001. Also in attendance was director Howard Storm, DGA Awards Committee Chairman. The winner will be announced at the 54th Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday, March 9, 2002, at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.
The nominees were the result of voting from the more than 12,000 members of the Directors Guild of America.
"Only five times has the winner of the DGA Award not won the Oscar for directing," said Coolidge. "Interestingly enough, the last time this anomaly occurred was last year when Ang Lee was chosen for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon which won the Directors Guild Award while fellow Guild nominee and DGA National Board Member, Steven Soderbergh, won the Best Director Academy Award for his film Traffic. Here today, upholding the Guild's longstanding tradition whereby the previous year's winner passes the torch of the Outstanding Directorial Achievement to the current year's nominees, the winner of the 2000 feature film award, ladies and gentlemen, Ang Lee."
Lee took the podium thanking Coolidge saying, "It's great to be back here. And it's now my honor to announce the names of the five directors who have been chosen for the highest possible honor, namely selection by their peers as a nominee for the DGA Award.
