On April 17 DGA PAC members Howard Storm, Jack Shea, Kim Kurumada, Tom Lofaro and Donald Petrie participated in a luncheon hosted at the DGA for Congresswoman Mary Bono (R-Calif.). As a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Congresswoman Bono has an important voice on issues at the interface of copyright law and internet technologies. Congresswoman Bono also serves as an active member of the GOP Entertainment Industry Task Force.
The meeting was an informal and open discussion of the special concerns of DGA members as part of the larger entertainment community. The discussion included the DGA's heightened attention to the problem of economic and creative protection of their work. This issue is particularly important because the House Commerce Committee will oversee legislation related to the growth of the internet and digital transmission.
DGA members also raised the problem of runaway film and television production and urged the Congresswoman to support the Guild's efforts to seek federal legislation to protect these interests.
Congresswoman Bono is well acquainted with the unique role that directors hold in the creative community in general and in our industry. She expressed her desire to strengthen her relationship with the Guild and indicated her clear interest in working with the DGA on runaway production and on intellectual property issues.
