On January 22, 2001, DGA President Jack Shea and DGA Award-winning director Steven Spielberg announced the five nominees for the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for the year 2000. The winner will be announced at the 53rd Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday, March 10, 2001, at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.
"The five nominees have been chosen by their peers as representatives of the best in motion picture directing," Shea said. "Each nominee has a distinct style and a unique creative vision and they're all worthy representatives of the best in the art and craft of motion picture directing."
Shea then introduced Spielberg, who was won the DGA Award a record three times (The Color Purple, Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan), was nominated a record nine times and who last year was the recipient of the DGA's Lifetime Achievement Award.
"Thank you very much," Spielberg said. "It is my honor today, to announce the nominees for the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature film for the year 2000. And they are..."

1968: Anthony Harvey won the DGA Award for The Lion in Winter while Carol Reed took home the Oscar® for Oliver!
1972: Francis Ford Coppola received the DGA's nod for The Godfather while the Academy selected Bob Fosse for Cabaret.
1985: Steven Spielberg received his first DGA Award for The Color Purple while the Oscar® went to Sydney Pollack for Out of Africa.
