AD/UPM members Bob Jeffords and Burt Bluestein joined forces to present "The Director's Team," a Special Educational Event sponsored by the Executive Committee of the DGA's SFCC on Saturday, November 18.

Held in the Conference Room of the new San Francisco Film Center Building at the Presidio, the six-hour program featured the relationship between the director, his production staff, the cast and crew. Topics included ways in which each member of the team can benefit the production; key contract issues for guilds and unions; scheduling & budgeting; requirements for set operations for commercials, series, TV films, features and multi-camera; and future possibilities for DGA members regarding digital technology, the internet and low-budget productions.

Each attendee received a multi-pocket three-ring binder containing 156 pages of material, including Safety Bulletins, Jeffords' Rules, The Studios Teacher's Guide, and a handout for nonunion atmosphere players ["Success as a Motion Picture Extra"], among other useful materials.

Jeffords opened the seminar with the importance of visualization and anticipation in 'getting the work.' Bluestein continued with a review of the distinct needs of features, tape and commercials. Both men then passed a wide range of topics back and forth, illustrating points with anecdotes drawn from two long and illustrious careers. Their collective experience of 65 years of production experience provided many insights and tips that members will be able to put to practical application on their next jobs.

During the short lunch break, the 19 attendees enjoyed a 'networking lunch,' trading news and discussing topics covered in the seminar. The attendees were in agreement that Bay Area membership will benefit from such high-quality seminars, and many, looking forward to next year's Educational Event roster, had suggestions of topics for future seminars.
