About 130 DGA members, corporate sponsors and assorted guests turned out for the 4th Annual DGA Golf Tournament on July 19. Once again golfers came to the El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, Calif., with woods, irons and open hearts toward the charity tournament designed to benefit the Directors Guild Foundation which provides financial support to members who are experiencing financial difficulties, the Special Projects Program of the DGA and the Motion Picture and Television Country Home and Hospital. This year's tournament raised approximately $30,000 for the Foundation.
The golfers were scored in competition at four levels to determine the tournament winners: Low Gross (the number of strokes needed to complete a round), Low Net (the number of strokes needed to complete a round minus one's official handicap), Calloway (a handicapping system used for those golfers who do not have an officially sanctioned handicap) and seniors. In addition the tournament featured a Long Drive and two Closest to the Pin competitions, as well as a raffle.
As the scores were tallied, the golfers enjoyed a barbecue luncheon. Tournament chairman Mel Damski thanked the participants and volunteers for making this year's tournament another success. DGA National Executive Director Jay D. Roth also thanked the sponsors for their participation. After DGA past President Gene Reynolds and director member Bill Smitrovich warmed up the audience with an appropriately themed joke, the raffle winners were announced and Damski and tournament co-Chair Dick Harwood awarded the winners of the various competitions.
Director member Dan Attias' score of 77 was good enough to win the Low Gross competition, while Long Drive competition winner Rich Singer placed second with a 79 and director member David Phinney placed third shooting an 80. Director member Fred Parker' score of 72 took first place in the Calloway competition while Delta Dental sponsor Scott Syring's 72 took second place and raffle-winning stage manager John Stewart's 72.5 took third, offering proof that he is as good as he is lucky. The Low Net competition seemed the pantheon of second unit director members with Kenny Endoso taking first place with a score of 63, Eddie Donno placing second with a score of 63 and Dick Ziker coming in third with a 64. Closest to the pin was won by director member James Rosenfield on hole 10 at 4' 8” and raffle-winning 2nd AD David Larson on hole 16 at 6' 7”. Director member Buddy Van Horn placed first in the Seniors competition with a score of 86, with Industry Health network sponsor Rob Honaker's 92 placing him second and UPM Jim Jacobs' 94 score capturing third.
This year's tournament was made possible due to the continued support of the sponsors which included Blue Cross of California, Delta Dental, Geffner & Bush, McMorgan & Company, Miller Kaplan Arase & Company, Union Bank of California in the Gold category; and The Industry Advantage Health Plans, Nicholas Applegate Capital Management, Nigro Karlin & Segal, The Segal Company, Sound Shore Management in the silver category.
