5th ANNUAL DGA STUDENT FILM AWARDS
The Directors Guild of America Student Film Awards for African-American, Asian/Pacific, Latino, and Women Filmmakers are designed to honor, encourage, and bring attention to outstanding minority and women film students in California and DGA selected film schools. The award brings a prize of $2500 to the winner in each group by the Directors Guild of America, and a product grant of 2000 feet of 16mm film provided by Kodak=s Worldwide Student Film Program.
Application
=s entry form.1. Competing films must have been completed in the 1998/99 school year (September 1998 through August 1999).
2. Applicants must be enrolled in or be a recent (one year) graduate from an accredited post-secondary institution in California or DGA selected university which offers a degree in film or television.
3. Applicants must be the director of the film.
4. Only films or videos produced for course credit or under the supervision of a faculty member are eligible.
5. Eligible student films are those in which every major crew position was held by a student. Major crew positions are listed on the Crew Sheet list, which is part of this application. Applicants must complete the Crew Sheet list.
6. Eligible films are dramas, documentaries and experimental. Animated films are not eligible. No more than 30% of stock footage may be used in documentary films.
7. Students may submit more than one film, but may not submit the same film to more than one group (African-American, Asian/Pacific, Latino or Women).
8. Entries must be on VHS or 3/4" videotape, and labeled with name, address, phone number and film title.
9. Entries should be no longer than 30 minutes in length. Longer films must be cued to the appropriate starting place. Only 30 minutes of each submission will be viewed.
10. A supervising faculty member must endorse the applicant
11. Entry deadline is 6:00 PM on Monday, October 11, 1999.
12. Committees consisting of African-American, Asian/Pacific, Latino, and Women DGA members are each responsible for the selection of the screening panels for their respective groups.
13. The winner in each group (African-American, Asian/Pacific, Latino, and Women) is awarded $2,500 by the DGA. An honorable mention certificate may also be given in each group. Kodak
=s Worldwide Student Film Program will also present each winner with 2000 feet of 16mm film and each honorable mention with 1200 feet of film. At the discretion of each committee, awards may not be granted. In the event of a tie, awards may be shared.14. Award winners and honorable mentions will be notified by Monday, October 25, 1999. Winners must submit their same completed film in its final format for screening at the Awards ceremony. Thirty (30) minutes of all winning films will be screened.
15. The Awards ceremony will take place at DGA headquarters in Hollywood on Tuesday, November 9, 1999.
16. Entries must be submitted to the Directors Guild of America, 7920 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA, 90046. Please include a self-addressed envelope if you would like your film returned to you.
