The Screen Directors Guild of Ireland (SDGI) presented “Ireland’s Choice,” a special screening of the Irish film Pavee Lackeen with its director Perry Ogden on Friday, October 28, 2005 at the DGA Theatre in Los Angeles.
Pavee Lackeen tells the story of Winnie, a ten-year old Irish Traveller (Gypsy) girl, who lives with her mother and siblings in a dilapidated trailer on the side of the road in a desolate industrialized area of Dublin. The film follows Winnie through several weeks of her life as she struggles with her identity in contemporary Ireland. The film presents an unflinching portrait of a marginalized community often living in Third World poverty in a modern, prosperous Ireland and made with a cast of real-life Travellers playing characters near to their own experiences.
Following the screening, Ogden participated in a Q&A session moderated by DGA Director Member Paul Quinn.
“Ireland’s Choice” was based on the successful model of the Director's Finder Series, which spotlights undistributed low budget and/or independent feature films directed by DGA members. The DGA invited the members of the International Association of English Speaking Directors Organizations (IAESDO) to select a never-released film for screening at the DGA and the SDGI was the first to participate in this unique partnership. Pavee Lackeen was chosen from 17 films submitted for consideration to a blue-ribbon panel that included members of the SDGI and DGA Past President Jack Shea.
