The Directors Guild Foundation (DGF) is a nonprofit charity that has assisted DGA members facing difficult times. Originally the DGA Education and Benevolent Foundation, the DGF was created in 1945. Independent from the Guild itself, the DGF respects personal anonymity to preserve the dignity of individuals in need of its assets. In addition to providing loans for Guild members in crisis, the DGF also funds Guild educational programs, supports the conservation and preservation of more than 828 modern films thus far through the DGA-Motion Picture Industry Conservation Collection at the UCLA Film and Television Archive, and provides financial support toward the expansion of the Motion Picture & Television Fund's Country Home and Hospital retirement and assisted-living facility.
Each year, the DGF conducts its annual appeal to the members of the Guild. Proceeds from the appeal, as well as the donated portions of members’ bequests, fund the DGF. The Foundation also raises money through various activities like the DGA's Annual Golf and Tennis Tournaments. Through their generosity, DGA members have allowed the DGF to continue its tradition of promoting the well-being of Southern California's entertainment community, assisting with health-care and charitable services. And because of the vision of the founding members the DGF provides all of this with compassion and respect for the dignity of the whole person.
In 1945 Director-member Leo McCarey became the first contributor by donating $25,000, and went on to become a founding officer of the DGF alongside Guild stalwarts Joseph Mankiewicz, Frank Capra, Tay Garnett, John Farrow and Foundation Board Members David Butler, John Ford, Howard Hawks, George Marshall, George Sidney, King Vidor, Raoul Walsh and William Wyler.
The current officers are:
- John Rich, Chairman of the Board
- Fred Rheinstein, First Vice Chairman
- Robert Butler, Second Vice Chairman
- Robert Ellis Miller, Secretary
- Gene Reynolds, Treasurer
- Jack Shea, Chairman Emeritus .
