Robinson, Sanford and Thomas share a laugh

On Thursday, June 5, 2008, the DGA’s Women’s Steering Committee (WSC) hosted a celebration of women directors who work in the arenas of feature film and episodic television. The event, played to an enthusiastic audience who filled the main theatre of DGA Headquarters in Los Angeles.

Following a welcome by DGA Fifth Vice President Betty Thomas, WSC Co-Chair Kari Skogland introduced a film tribute created by directors Drew Rosenberg (Sex and the Girl) and Laurie Agard (Fast Women). The 15-minute film was a montage of clips from iconic films and television episodes directed by women members of the Guild.

Director Penelope Spheeris (The Decline Of Western Civilization, The Kid & I) moderated the panel discussion, “The Business of Directing” that featured directors Catherine Hardwicke (Lords of Dogtown, Twilight), Amy Heckerling (Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Clueless), Lesli Linka Glatter (State of Emergency, Heroes), Mimi Leder (Deep Impact, The West Wing), Kasi Lemmons (Eve’s Bayou, Talk to Me), Angela Robinson (D.E.B.S, Herbie: Fully Loaded), Arlene Sanford (A Very Brady Sequel, Boston Legal), and Betty Thomas (Private Parts, John Tucker Must Die). The panel engaged in a lively exchange about their career paths, their trials and tribulations and how they continue to triumph through the industry.
