As part of the Guild’s ongoing mission to seek more diversity behind the camera, 26 female and ethnic minority DGA Director-members attended a networking mixer at 20th Century Fox Studios on Monday, May 14, 2007. The event brought the members together with Fox Studio executives in a position to make hiring decisions.
The requirement for the attending DGA members was having had episodic directing experience within the last two years. Thus qualified, these members participated in five-minute one-on-one sessions with Senior Vice President Marcy Ross, Vice President Beth Miyares, Corporate Director Shana Waterman, Manager James Oh and Coordinator Monique Nash from the Current Programming Department of Fox Broadcasting Company; and Senior Vice President Jeff Glaser, Vice Presidents Ann Johnson, Lianne Siegel, Dan Shelburne and Russell Rothberg, Coordinator Mandy Kaprall, and Corporate Directors Stacey Levin and Dana Sharpless from Current Programming Department of 20th Century Fox Television.
“This mixer was valuable because it gave us ‘face time’ with people who can recommend us for work,” said director Marian Deaton. “Meeting one another is so much better than submitting a ‘cold’ resume or reel.”
Director Millicent Shelton agreed, stating, “It is far easier for studio and network executives to fill slates with Directors that they already know. But mixers like this give an opportunity for them to expand that list to include more diverse Directors.”
