On Saturday, April 29, 2006, Bay Area members gathered for the San Francisco Coordinating Committee’s first seminar of the year: “Scheduling & Breakdowns for Features & Television.”

During the six and a half-hour program, local UPM members Lope Yap, Ned Kopp and John Slosser revealed the secrets of script breakdown and scheduling in three ranges: mega-budget features, low-budget features, and episodic television. Stage Manager Cathy Hammer moderated the panel.

Yap called upon his thirty-three years of experience to give the group a refresher course on the basic components of script breakdown before taking them through the ten-page script sample with the special attention to the workload and components that a large-scale budget would create. Kopp, a veteran of scores of films and hundreds of commercials, covered aspects of Movie Magic and EP budgeting software. He also provided the ten-page script sample broken down with his notes for what he prefers to call his ‘restricted budget’ projects. Slosser, another veteran of episodic television, gave valuable insights about the differences between what’s required for a typical feature vs. series television. Hammer used her years of experience in daytime television to keep things moving and informative, asking the panel questions about difficult production issues. Members agreed that the day was a great experience and a huge success.
