On, Monday, April 2, 2007, the DGA’s African American Steering Committee (AASC) presented A Conversation with African American Composers as an addendum to its monthly meeting in the Boardroom of the Guild’s Los Angeles Headquarters.

The event was designed to educate DGA members on the process of integrating music into film and television projects and featured a discussion centered around what music can and can’t do, when and how to hire a composer, temp scores, and how to communicate with your composer.

The panel was comprised of film and television composer Samm Brown whose credits include work on NBC, ESPN and the Discovery Channel, as well as commercials for Burger King, McDonald’s, Ford, and Microsoft; pianist, producer, arranger, composer and electronic musician Todd Cochran whose credits include Keep the Faith, Baby (The Adam Clayton Powell Story), Woman Thou Art Loosed and Love... & Other 4 Letter Words; True Music LLC CEO Kurt Farquhar whose credits include a wide range of dramatic series, movies for television and sitcoms such as King of Queens, The Parkers, Sister Sister, Soul Food, and Moesha; Patrice Rushen, head composer/musical director for the Emmy Awards, NAACP Image Awards, People’s Choice Awards, HBO’s Comic Relief, and whose other credits include Our America, The Killing Yard, Cora Unashamed, and The Steve Harvey Show; and record producer and songwriter/composer Gregory D. Smith whose credits include State Property, Hidden Blessings, The Playaz Court, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as well as commercials for Honda Motors, Etrade, JC Penny, and Match.com. DGA Board Alternate/AASC Co-Chair Carl Weathers served as moderator.
