Providing another chance for for DGA members to view films from cultures around the world, on Wednesday, February 21st, the Special Projects Committee presented the seventh screening of its Global Cinema Series. The evening’s selection was a film from The Netherlands, Black Book (Zwartboek), written and directed by Paul Verhoeven.
Set in the Dutch underground during World War II, Black Book is inspired by the true life of Rachel Stein, a young Jewish woman who seeks revenge for the murder of her family. Black Book was Holland’s official submission to the Academy Awards® for Best Foreign-Language Film and won the 2006 Venice Film Festival Young Cinema Award for Best International Film and was nominated for the festival's Golden Lion Award for directing.
Following the screening, Verhoeven took the stage for a discussion about the making of the film moderated by director John Landis. Later they were joined by cast members Carice van Houten who plays Rachel Stein and Sebastian Koch who plays her lover, Ludwig Müntze, a German officer who becomes a resistance sympathizer.
