On Tuesday, December 19, 2006, the DGA PAC hosted a luncheon with US Representative Howard Berman (D-CA) at the DGA’s headquarters in Los Angeles. When the new Democratic controlled Congress convened in January, Berman became chairman of the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Courts, Internet and the Intellectual Property.

This subcommittee holds jurisdiction over key issues that affect all Guild members including copyright protection as well as piracy. DGA President Michael Apted welcomed Rep. Berman by saying, “Howard has been, is, and I’m sure will be our best friend in Washington, as he has been Hollywood’s friend in the 25 years he’s been in office.” PAC chair and Third Vice President Taylor Hackford, his co-chair on the PAC Leadership Council, First Vice President Paris Barclay, and 30 members of the PAC attended the luncheon with Berman.

Hackford emphasized Berman’s assistance to the Guild through early and continued support of federal production incentives and resistance to legislation allowing third parties to “sanitize” movies through unauthorized editing. "The idea of today's meeting with this very, very close friend and ally of ours was to congratulate him on his Chairmanship and say that we look forward to working with him in new and exciting ways,” Hackford said.

Berman thanked the Guild for helping him to understand the issues and challenges facing the entertainment industry. “You (the DGA) are both committed to objectives and very practical in how you get there,” Berman said. As Chair of the Intellectual Property subcommittee, Berman also said he would focus on such key issues as piracy, both Internet and counterfeit, orphan works and net neutrality. He noted some recent victories for artists and copyright holders, including the Grokster decision in the U.S. Supreme Court and the court ruling in favor of the DGA and studios in the CleanFlicks case. The importance of the subcommittee to the industry cannot be underestimated, he said. “It has a great deal of impact on this great struggle in the digital age of protecting the content and making sure that the creators get compensated for what they’ve created,” Berman said.
