What is the "Under the Influence" Screening Series?
Recognizing the fact that some of the most influential and well known independent filmmakers of today were inspired by the work of the previous generation of filmmakers, the DGA's "Under The Influence" Screening Series offers the opportunity to bring these worlds together. The UI series highlights visionary and innovative films, followed by a post-screening dialogue between the film's director and an independent filmmaker who was influenced by his or her work.
The UI series debuted on May 28, 1998 with a screening of George Hickenlooper's short biopic, Monte Hellman: American Auteur, followed by Hellman's own cult classic Two-Lane Blacktop and a discussion between Hellman and filmmaker Allison Anders.
The series quickly followed up with a June 1998 screening of The Parallax View followed by a discussion between its director, Alan J. Pakula, and filmmaker Steven Soderbergh. The UI series has continued to be a success, spawning an East Coast counterpart version in 2003 that began a New York screening of Sidney Lumet's classic Network followed by a discussion between Lumet and filmmaker Raymond De Felitta.
